Artist Statement
Visual art began for me growing up in a family of writers. I saw the world in a different light, and often turned to my big box of 64 Crayola crayons to try and express this. My penchant for observation of the natural world led me to study environmental sciences and natural history alongside life drawing, which is what sparked my exploration into painting. Over 50 years later, the natural world still inspires my work every day.
While much of my older work is oil on canvas, most of my current paintings are done with gouache on high quality fine art paper or wood panel. I have come to adore gouache for its versatility and quick drying ability, which allows me to create layers rich in color.
I like to focus on four main subjects of study. Each, as I have discovered, seems to inform the other in unexpected ways.
Outdoor Life
I love to paint nature in all its wacky and infinite wonder. She never ceases to inspire and awe, but there’s a gentle familiarity beneath the chaos.
Home Life
Sometimes when it’s rainy or I just feel like staying indoors, I love to bring still objects to life, or capture scenes from my window or porch, little details.
Animal Life
I strive to capture the unique personality and energy of our animal friends in their usual surroundings, finding a way to express their spirit.
Imaginitive Life
This work has been a means of making friends with my shadow, allowing unbidden expressions to surface. There’s a solace in the surprises I find.
